Contract Belote - Beginner 1

What to know to start playing contract belote

  • You must know how to play classic belote.

  • At contract belote in Bel Atout, the only meld allowed is the belote meld (no tierce, quint, etc.).

  • The rules of the card play are the same as in classic belote.

  • There is only one round of dealing and the bidding is done by declaring a contract height and a suit (for example, 80♥ or 100♠).

  • The contract heights go up in 10s from 80 to 170, to which are added the 250 and 270 capots.

  • Overbidding is allowed. You show support for your partner's suit when you overbid in his suit (for example, 90♦ over 80♦ is a +10 support).

  • The bidding system described here is the Regina system used in Bel Atout. But once you know one system, you can easily discover others.
  • To fully understand the bidding, use the tooltips:

  • In the prepared games accessible below, a short comment on a yellow background will be displayed at the end of each deal, so that you can check that you have chosen the right bid and played the right contract.

    Comment

If you want this comment to appear only after the comparison, open the General preferences on the Play page and check the box In a prepared game, display the comment only after the comparison. Note that even if the comment is not visible, clicking the message bar at the bottom of the window can display it if needed.

Practicing the 80, 90, 100 and 110 openings

What to know before practicing

  • The 80 and 100 openings are very similar as they first ask for support in the trump suit. You choose one or the other depending on the strength of your hand. Be careful, always opening 80 cautiously can lead your partner to bid a new suit or an opponent to overcall (make a competitive bid). If you have the hand matching the 100 opening, open 100.

  • The 90 and 110 openings are very similar as they ask for Aces outside the trump suit. You choose one or the other depending on the strength of your hand. Be careful, always opening 90 cautiously can lead your partner to bid a new suit or an opponent to overcall (make a competitive bid). If you have the hand matching the 110 opening, open 110.

  • Nevertheless, bidding systems are not perfect, and they do not guarantee that the contracts declared will be made. But their performance must be analyzed over the long term, on a very large number of deals.

  • The prepared games are never counted in your statistics. You can therefore play them and replay them without fear of altering your statistical results.

  • At the end of each deal, you can replay the deal by the Replay deal normally button of the primary toolbar.

Replay deal Replay deal normally button or shortcut F3.

  • At the end of each prepared games, you can replay the game or only certain deals, using the Return to the prepared game button (bottom right of the screen).
